So my balcony had this really ugly crack. Don’t worry, it’s not a structural risk or anything—just extremely ugly…

So I decided I needed to cover it. I liked the idea of it being temporary since I didn’t know if I would like it and I wasn’t sure what was ok with my home owner’s association. And to be totally honest, I was too lazy to read through all the massive packets they give you. So I bought these wood tiles and these grass tiles from Amazon. The tiles are cool because they are self-draining. So you don’t have to worry about them getting all gross if it rains.

STEPS FOR USING PATIO TILES TO MAKEOVER YOUR BALCONY

It’s super simple to do. First, you have to measure the size of your patio/deck to figure out how many tiles you need and order them.

Now it’s time to put them together! They interlock on the back, so they stay together. You are supposed to do this checkered pattern (first picture below), but I wasn’t a fan. So I put mine all facing the same direction (second picture below).

Then, I decided I wanted to make a cute little grass area. I am going to put a couple cute planters there. I will make a separate post about this, so stay tuned!

In order to get the tiles to the appropriate size, I used my mini circle saw to cut the wood and grass tiles to fit where it is angled on my balcony (see top of the second picture above).

The grass tiles have a similar interlocking system. However, they don’t interlock perfectly with the wood tiles. So I used zip ties to tie them together. Now, I didn’t have to worry about them drifting apart or blowing off my balcony. Luckily, the zip ties easily hide under the tiles. So you don’t even see that they are there (see image below)!
